Masonry construction/mortar: Worker cleans mixer that produced mortar for laying rock wall. Mortar mixer has two main sections, the motor on left and the mixing drum on right. It can be towed, traveling on its two wheels behind a truck with trailer hitch. Masonry mortar is mixture of sand, portland cement or masonry cement, and water. At end of day mixer drum is coated with hardened mortar that must be cleaned off. The worker bangs outside of drum with small hand sledge hammer to break up mortar on inside surface of drum. He then rinses it out with water, checking it at end to be sure it is clean enough. Ann Arbor, Michigan 2005.

  • Masonry construction equipment: Lull 4-wheel drive rough terrain telescoping boom forklift loads drum onto flatbed truck hauling miscellaneous equipment for a masonry contractor. Included is mortar mixer, wheelbarrows, electric cord, mortar boxes, and tool box. Santa Rosa Beach, Florida Panhandle, June 2006.
  • Masonry/concrete construction: On the job mixers by EZ Grout: Near left are two Mud Hog machines which can mix mortar, concrete, and grout, primarily for masonry construction. They are gasoline or electrically driven. At right rear is Grout Hog machine to mix grout primarily for use in masonry construction. Mortar is mixture of cement, sand, and water stiff enough to build masonry walls. Grout is similar but flows easily to fill cavities, particularly in and between masonry units, such as brick and concrete block. Concrete is mixture of portland cement, sand, gravel, and water. World of Concrete, Las Vegas, January 2006.

Worker builds drain basin for storm sewer using portland cement mortar and curved concrete blocks. Mortar is mixed in mixer and transported in white plastic bucket (lower left). Worker first uses his hands to take mortar from bucket and place it on concrete block. He then places concrete blocks in mortar. Lastly, he spreads mortar over the inside surface of the drainage basin. A drain basin is where storm water draining from stree (such as through corrugated black plastic flexible tubing) flows into the main storm sewer. Huron Parkway, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 2005.
