Road and fence construction: Truck mounted, highly specialized drop-hammer pile/post driver drives galvanized steel wide flange sections into ground to provide support for vehicle guardrails. The post is inserted into the drop-hammer guides/leads, and the top is fitted/attached to the cap that receives the beating from the drop-hammer. Operator uses control levers to initiate lift of drop-hammer by cable and then its drop onto post/pile cap. Dixboro Bridge construction, Ann Arbor, Michigan, August 2005.

  • Marine, bridge construction: Partial cofferdam around damaged bridge pier, made from rolled steel sheet piles, is in foreground. Note the supports on top of pier that carried bridge truss spans, that are now stored on river bank to be returned when pier is repaired. Other photos show construction work barges and equipment working to repair/replace pier. Danube River in Hungary west of Budapest, August 2006.
  • Marine, bridge construction: Partial cofferdam around damaged bridge pier, made from rolled steel sheet piles, is in foreground. Right rear is remaining bridge on north side of river. left rear is construction barge, carrying crane and drill. Danube River in Hungary west of Budapest, August 2006.
  • Marine/river construction: Construction barge carries Liebherr crawler mounted lattice boom, cable operated crane and ABI Mobilram pile drilling and vibratory/ impacting/ pressing rig. Barge also carries Sections of steel sheet piling to be driven to complete the cofferdam for bridge pier. Barge is controlled by construction tug. Danube River in Hungary west of Budapest, August 2006.
  • Marine/river construction: Construction barge carries Liebherr crawler mounted lattice boom, cable operated crane and ABI Mobilram drill and vibratory/ impact/ pressing pile driving rig. Crane lifts steel sheet piles that lay in front of it and feeds them to the pile driving rig. Danube River in Hungary west of Budapest, August 2006.
  • Marine/river construction: Construction barge carries Liebherr 974 Litronic hydraulic operated crawler mounted backhoe set up as an underwater dredge to shape river bottom for bridge construction. Barge is anchored by rectangular steel piers pushed a shallow distance into river bed. Danube River in Hungary west of Budapest, August 2006.

  • Marine, bridge construction: Two steel truss bridge spans removed from damaged bridge pier and stored on shore, to be returned to service once pier has been repaired/replaced. Danube River in Hungary west of Budapest, August 2006.
  • Road construction: Soil auger mounted on City truck crane boom drills a hole, at spot marked with orange paint, for pier to support lighting/sign. At auger bit full depth, boom lifts out auger after drilling to its depth, retaining a large part of the soil on the auger bit. City workers then shovel back the soil from hole to keep it from falling into the hole. Soil on bit will soon be placed in bed of truck on photo's right. Note truck crane outriggers are extended to support crane boom against overturning the truck.Huron Parkway at Huron High School, near Huron River, Ann Arbor, MI, 2005

  • Construction pile driving: Vulcan 505 25,000 ft-lb 60 inch stroke single-acting air-driven air/steam hammer drives structural steel H piles into the ground. Piles are supported and guided by swinging leads which are supported by Manitowoc 2900WC crawler mounted open web boom cable operated crane. Delonis Shelter, Ann Arbor, 2003.
  • Construction pile driving: Vulcan single-acting air-driven hammer drives structural steel H piles into the ground. Previously driven pile is seen to this side of pile driving position, labeled "687". H piles to be driven are to the left. Compressed air hose to power the pile hammer is shown in foreground and going up to hammer. Piles are supported and guided by swinging leads which are supported by Manitowoc 2900WC crawler mounted open web boom cable operated crane. Delonis Shelter, Ann Arbor, 2003.
  • Construction pile driving: Vulcan 505 25,000 ft-lb 60 inch stroke single-acting air-driven air/steam hammer drives structural steel H piles into the ground. The ram, marked "505", is attached to the piston of the cylinder at the top of the figure. On each cycle, the cylinder raises the piston and ram to the top of the cylinder with compressed air received through the vertical compressed air hose to the left of ram. When the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, the piston and ram are released and fall by gravity to impact the top of the pile, through a pile cap that protects the top of the pile. Piles and hammer are supported and guided by swinging leads, which are supported by the crane boom and cable. Delonis Shelter, Ann Arbor, 2003.

  • Construction pile driving: ICE 812 Vibro-Hammer vibratory pile driver/extractor drives sheet piles to form cofferdam at Huron River. Sheet pile sections are connected by interlocking edges, which allow vertical slippage during sheet pile driving. (See inset detail of circled connection in photo.) Pile driver is supported by crawler mounted cable driven open web boom crane. Worker inside cofferdam is cutting off the top of the sheet pile to the right with an acetylene torch. Broadway Bridge, Ann Arbor, 2003.
