  • Masonry, brick, block, construction: Brick layers on scaffold to left lay bricks for exterior walls. Yellow scaffold is welded tubular modular scaffold, with 2"x10" S4S dimensional planks layed across scaffold frames to form work and material platform(s). Lower center is masonry saw station. Mortar is mixed at lower right. SkyTrak rough terrain fork lift is just to right of center midground. East Ann Arbor UMHS Clinic, Plymouth Rd, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 2005.
  • General, masonry, earth construction: Busy crews fill alley with construction activity. Two workers in ight foreground are stretching string for place masonry around manhole. Worker in left foreground is sawing material, probably for formwork, for concrete/ masonry using portable diamond blade rotary saw. Crew in background with Caterpillar backhoe is coarse grading the gravel base for paving. Beyond backhoe is Caterpillar backhoe/loader parked across alley entrance from Liberty Street. Alley between Washington and Liberty, 1/2 block West of Main, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 2005.
  • General, masonry, construction: Communication within busy construction crews. Two workers in right foreground discuss their work on manhole and rear entrance to building. Worker at left is talking dramatically to his foreman. Worker in center rear gives directions to backhoe operator. Alley between Washington and Liberty, 1/2 block West of Main, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 2005.
  • Masonry construction: Worker shovels mortar out of mortar box and into bucket and then carries bucket to manhole in alley. He then shovels mortar as needed by bricklayer to build manhole using concrete masonry units. Mortar is mixed in top loading mixer and then dumped into mortar box, both on back of Ford F700 flatbed truck outfitted as a rolling masonry construction tender. Washington Street and alley between Washington and Liberty, 1/2 block West of Main, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 2005.
  • Manhole construction, sewer/drain construction, masonry construction: Worker seals/parges manhole masonry by applying mortar by hand to inside of manhole ring casting, which will support manhole cover, and manhole masonry wall. Mortar has been hand carried from the mortar mixer at entrance to this alley, in the buckets shown here. Alley between Washington and Liberty, 1/2 block West of Main, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 2005.
  • Brick construction: Bricklayers standing on lower level of Hydro-Mobile brick scaffold laying brick for outside face/vineer construction. YMCA, Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Brick construction: Laborer transporting brick with brick tongs from stacked brick on pallet to position next to bricklayers. Insert shows action of brick tongs. Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Brick construction: Laborer transporting mortar from mortar box to mortar boards of bricklayers. Construction of YMCA, Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Brick construction: Steel band strapped packs of brick for outside surface vineer. Two open tunnels near bottom of each pack allows forklift to easily move them. YMCA, Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Pavement construction: Placing brick pavers in herringbone pattern for traffic ramp to bridge. Pavers are placed on sand base, then covered with sand to fill voids between bricks. Sand is compacted with vibratory compactor as shown in left rearm and the excess sand is swept off paver surface. Broadway Bridge and Depot Street, Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Rehab construction: Self elevating exterior scaffolds for rehabilitation of stone facade of older building. Welded scaffold at roof to rebuild roof. New York City, 2004
  • Construction safety, fall hazard: Worker climbs built in ladder of welded tubular scaffold. Two positive safety factors: (1) vertical support extends above top platform, which allows worker to continue climbing vertically until reaching the platform with his feet to easily step onto the platform (instead of scrambling over the edge if the extension is not present). (2) Worker carries no tools in his hands, so he has full use of both hands and feet to safely climb ladder. Tools and light materials can easily be pulled up with a light rope once worker is standing on platform. A significant unsafe factor is the scaffold built in ladder ascends 6'-4" with 4 steps = 19" per step, which has distance between steps greater than 16 3/4" allowed by OSHA standards. Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Stone/rock masonry construction: Sample for Architect's/Owner's approval of stone for wall of residence. Stone mason has laid selected stone in specified pattern, with additional stone samples, on foundation masonry ledge, for architect and/or owner to view and approve or request changes. Top of photo is 4'x8' sheets of plywood exterior sheathing, nailed to vertical studs, laid horizontally so plywood exterior laminations are perpendicular to supporting studs. Black background is bitumen layer painted on concrete basement wall to resist penetration of moisture from earth through wall. Yellow material is exterior rigid fiberglass insulation between ground and basement wall, once soil is backfilled against wall insulation.. Arlington Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan 2005.
  • Rehabilitation/maintenance/preservation construction: Permanent on-site fabrication shop for repair, replacement of stone masonry and sculpture for cathedral. Cologne, Germany August 2006.
  • French residential/house construction: Variety of hard-baked clay tile roofs, from new to old, on neighboring houses. Central Canal, Burgundy, France September 2006.
  • Roof construction, materials: Construction of ceramic tile roof (left side of photo) consists of (1) rolling out asphalt impregnated roofing felt to cover sloped plywood roof sheathing that spans roof trusses, (2) placing ~1x2 inch wood strips vertically on roof, (3) nailing ~1x2 inch wood nailing strips horizontally across vertical strips, and (4) nailing the top of hard fired ceramic roof tile to the nailing strips, with bottom of rile overlapping top of tile below it. Roof on left is older tile roof, constructed the same way with the right edge cut back to join it to new buiding being constructed beside it. St. Leger, France September 2006
  • Road construction, masonry construction: Workers place sand on concrete base and hand grade sand to receive brick pavers on pallet in background. Broadway Bridge and Depot Street, Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Pavement construction: Placing brick pavers in herringbone pattern on sand base for traffic ramp to bridge. Broadway Bridge and Depot Street, Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Road construction, masonry construction: Workers placing brick pavers in herringbone pattern for Depot Street under Broadway Bridge. Workers middle right carry pavers from forklift pallet to workers who are placing pavers at leading edge on sand base back right. Worker mid-left is compacting sand between pavers. About 10 feet of pavers are ready to receive sand. Ann Arbor, 2004.
