  • Caterpillar 350 crawler mounted hydraulic backhoe bucket full of soil and then dumping its load. Dixboro Bridge, Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Earthmoving construction: Komatsu D61PX crawler tractor bull dozer moves granular soil out of collected water. Dixboro Bridge, Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Earth construction: Peterbilt diesel tractor pulls tandem rear dump trailers on graded site. Hyndai Automotive Tech Center, Geddes & Leforge roads, just east of Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Bridge construction site: Lower half of photo is south ramp of Dixboro Bridge to cross the Huron River. Upper half is the North approach, and in the distance is the intersection of Dixboro Rd with Geddes Rd. In mid-photo are tops of concrete bridge piers with foundations in the river bottom. Dump trucks are bringing fill soil from which ramp is being built. We can see the raised truck bed of one dump truck in right center of photo. In order to dump soil, it decoupled from its tandem trailer, which waits at far right center. Ann Arbor, MI, 2002.
  • Earth moving construction: Bobcat 863 skid-steer tractor with stone separating blade/bucket lifts and sifts soil to extract and separate stones. Operator is picking out and tossing away soil clumps that sifted out with stones. Dixboro Bridge, Ann Arbor, MI, 2004.
  • Construction pile driving: ICE 812 Vibro-Hammer vibratory pile driver/extractor drives sheet piles to form cofferdam at Huron River. Sheet pile sections are connected by interlocking edges, which allow vertical slippage during sheet pile driving. (See inset detail of circled connection in photo.) Pile driver is supported by crawler mounted cable driven open web boom crane. Worker inside cofferdam is cutting off the top of the sheet pile to the right with an acetylene torch. Broadway Bridge, Ann Arbor, 2003.
  • Earthmoving construction: Crawler mounted hydraulic backhoe reaches to excavate earth for basement. Laborer operates vibratory soil compaction machine in area recently excavated, beyond backhoe. In right background, soil is supported by timber breastboards. Breastboards are supported by structural steel H shape soldier beams, which were themselves driven as piles deeply into the soil, below bottom of basement. Cardiovascular Center, University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Earthwork, steel, concrete construction: Basement area has WF steel soldier beam, timber breastboard, tie back temporary retaining wall in left center. Bundles of resteel sit at grade level behind retaining wall, and two horizontal cables provide excavation edge fall protection. Right center bottom to top cast-in-place (CIP) reinforced concrete foundation piers sitting on CIP spread footings below and support base plates for H-section columns for superstructure. Protruding from piers are rebars, in circular pattern in piers, and 4 anchor bolts for column base plates. The rebars will be cut off before base plates and columns are set. heavy copper wire also protrudes from top of piers that is also attached to an electric ground plate in soil at bottom of footing. The cable will be attached/ spliced to metal above to provide an electic ground for building. Resteel extends above CIP foundation wall at bottom and upper right to provide reinforcing continuity at joint with future wall above and CIP slab to right. Backfill at bottom of excavation is sand, and additional granular material at top rear will later provide vertical support for CIP slab. Pink polystyrene sheets stacked in excavation will provide insulation when attached to exterior of foundation/ basement wall, as at mid-height far right. Cardiovascular Center, University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, 2004.

  • Soil construction, earth moving: Caterpillar D5M 110 hp track mounted bull dozer backs up using backside of dozer blade to rough grade the future roadbed. Huron Parkway, Ann Arbor, Michigan 2005.
  • Earthmoving construction, rough grading:Link-Belt LS-2650 crawler mounted, hydraulic backhoe excavator sits on soil pile it created, looking down on its excavated driveway and garage foundation. Residence in background is receiving exterior repairs. Note the geotextile mud dams at lower left that limit runoff from site to adjacent property. Ann Arbor, Michigan October 2005.
