Soil moving, road construction: Worker pushes a gasoline driven vibratory soil compactor on a crushed gravel layer to provide base for street curb and sidewalk. Additional crushed gravel is in shovel of Caterpillar skeed steer loader on right. In foreground is excavation in which another worker is building a drain basin with concrete block and mortar. Huron Parkway, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 2005.
builds drain basin for storm sewer using portland cement mortar and curved concrete blocks. Mortar is mixed in mixer and transported in white plastic bucket (lower left). Worker first uses his hands to take mortar from bucket and place it on concrete block. He then places concrete blocks in mortar. Lastly, he spreads mortar over the inside surface of the drainage basin. A drain basin is where storm water draining from stree (such as through corrugated black plastic flexible tubing) flows into the main storm sewer. Huron Parkway, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 2005.

• Construction crane: Driving Potain compact self-erecting tower crane on Cathedral de la Major in Marseilles, France. Second section of boom is folded back.
• Construction crane: Manitowoc 555 cable-rigged crawler-mounted open-lattice boom crane with jib supports construction of concrete retaining wall, supported by tie-backs, for deep excavation. Cardiovascular Center, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, 2004.
• Building Construction: Two large segments of a large building site: Retaining wall and foundation construction to left and structural steel construction to right. Mobile crawler crane serves the left, and tower crane serves the right. Mobile hydraulic crane serves center foundation area. A second hydraulic crane behind building to far right cannot be seen here. Cardiovascular Center, University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, 2004.
• Elevated and vertical construction: Gold Lot exhibits of hydraulic cranes, cable cranes, tower cranes, and personnel lift. Photo by Scott Carr. CONEXPO, Las Vegas, Nevada, March 15-19
• Caterpillar D6M 140 horsepower, 15.5 ton crawler tractor construction bulldozer. Broadway Bridge construction, Ann Arbor, 2003.
• Soil, earth construction: Caterpillar D4G LP dozer spreads soil in bottom of excavation. Caterpillar 345BL hydraulic excavator excavates soil from same excavation. Apparently, the bucket of the excavator has been lowered to rooof of dozer, to consternation of dozer operator. East Ann Arbor Clinic, University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, Michigan 2005
• Earth moving construction: Caterpillar D4C track mounted tractor bull dozer excavates earth for underground construction alongside parkway. Earth is dozed to this end of trench, where a backhoe loads it into dump trucks to haul away. Huron Parkway at Huron High School, Ann Arbor, Michigan August 2005
• General, masonry, earth construction: Busy crews fill alley with construction activity. Two workers in ight foreground are stretching string for place masonry around manhole. Worker in left foreground is sawing material, probably for formwork, for concrete/ masonry using portable diamond blade rotary saw. Crew in background with Caterpillar backhoe is coarse grading the gravel base for paving. Beyond backhoe is Caterpillar backhoe/loader parked across alley entrance from Liberty Street. Alley between Washington and Liberty, 1/2 block West of Main, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 2005.

• Caterpillar 2447 motor grader blade, with front scarifier. Depot Street construction, Ann Arbor, 2004.
• Earthmoving, aggregate construction: Large 5+ CY/CM Hendrix draining dragline bucket is operated by Liebherr HS 895 HD Litronic hydraulic open lattice boom 91,000 kg / 400,000 lb capacity crawler crane. A dragline bucket is controlled by three elements: The vertical wire rope above the bucket raises and lowers the bucket either with or independent of the boom raising/lowering. The chain from front of bucket is pulled in and let out by the wire rope operated by a front spindle. The short wire rope attached to the top-front of bucket allows the bucket to pitch front first into the excavation pit, then be pulled upward at end of loading to capture the load. The basic operation is to pull in a load, then release the bucket to swing forward and be lowered to capture the next load. CONEXPO, Las Vegas, Nevada, March 15-19, 2005.
