  • Building construction demolition. Samsung SE 350 LC2 backhoe grapple tears window out of building wall. YMCA, Ann Arbor, 2003
  • Demolition/concrete construction: Three Caterpillar 345BL track mounted hydraulic backhoe excavators fitted with different demolition tools: The near tool, on the left, is a grappler for pulling walls, roofs, etc down and loading debris into trucks. The next tool is a pulverizer attachment that breaks debris up, picks reinforcing bars out of debris pile and transports bars to the bar shear/lopper to be cut into smaller pieces. In the rear is a shear tool that shears steel rebars into two pieces. Old City parking garage, Washington and First, Ann Arbor, Michigan, February 2006.
  • Caterpillar 345B backhoe with grappler bucket takes bite out of porch overhang of car dealer body shop to begin building demolition. Washtenaw near Huron Parkway, Ann Arbor, Michigan. January, 2007.
  • Asphalt pavement demolition: Three Caterpillar 4468 Turbo excavator-loaders demolish pavement, load it on trucks, and compact backfill to repair soil support and base for street damaged by large leak and repair of water main below street. The Cat 4468 in the foreground is picking up asphalt pavement debris and underlying soil and loading it into the dump truck at rear right to be hauled away. The Allied Rammer S-26 hydraulic pavement breaker on the excavator/backhoe boom of the Cat 4468 in the midground breaks the asphalt pavement up in pieces that can be lifted and loaded into the truck. Waiting rear left is the third Cat 4486, which has a vibrating plate soil compactor on its excavator/backhoe boom to compact the earth backfill that will soon be placed in the hole being excavated. Montview Blvd, Fitzsimons/University of Colorado Hospital Campus, Aurora, Colorado, December, 2006.
  • Demolition, construction recycling: 360 degree rotating hydraulic demolition pincer/ shearer/pulvrizer mounted on Caterpillar 345BL track mounted hydraulic backhoe excavator separates and sorts out metal debris into stacks. The shearer stirs the debris around to expose and pick out useful materials such as copper tubing, structural steel, steel deck. Ross Business School, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, May 2006.
  • Demolition, drawbridge: Demolition view of bascule drawbridge on Potomac River, in open position, but with the draw bridge leaves (beams and road deck) cut off; leaving the geared rotating base (circled in gray). A bascule draw bridge has counterweights (circled in blue) on back side of draw bridge leaves so that raising the leaves and opening the bridge to allow ships to go through uses very little power/ energy. Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project at George Washington Street, Alexandria, Virginia, November 2006.
  • Demolition construction, concrete: Caterpillar 236 skid steer loader with grappler bucket travels to move concrete debris. In rear is Caterpillar 345B backhoe excavator fitted with pulverizer to reinforcing steel bars from debris. Washington and 1st, Ann Arbor, Michigan, February 2006

  • Brick pavement construction demolition: Case 1845C skid steer tractor with forklift attachment has broken loose a segment of brick paver street. Depot Street, Ann Arbor, 2004.
  • Demolition, construction recycling: 360 degree rotating hydraulic demolition pincer/ shearer/pulvrizer mounted on Caterpillar 345BL track mounted hydraulic backhoe excavator separates and sorts out metal debris into stacks. Here the shearer stirs the debris around to expose and pick out useful materials such as copper tubing, structural steel, steel deck. [Note: The hollow-core concrete block are 8x8x16 inch in size.] Ross Business School, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, May 2006.

  • Demolition/concrete construction: Caterpillar 345BL track mounted hydraulic backhoe excavator fitted with pulverizer attachment picks reinforcing bars out of debris pile and transports bars to the bar shear/lopper to be cut into smaller pieces. This muncher is responsible for munching the old concrete off the reinforcing bars so the resteel can be sheared and recycled. Old City parking garage, Washington and First, Ann Arbor, Michigan, February 2006.
  • Building construction demolition. Samsung SE 350 LC2 backhoe grapple shovel breaks up and pulls brick vineer off concrete block building wall. YMCA, Ann Arbor, 2003
  • Caterpillar 345B backhoe rakes grappler bucket across sections of sheet metal roof deck that are hanging loose because the grappler has pulled out the steel bar joists that supported them, tearing sheets loose so they fall down to the concrete floor slab. Washtenaw near Huron Parkway, Ann Arbor, Michigan. January, 2007.
  • Grappler bucket teeth of Caterpillar 345B backhoe reach into roof to rip out open web joist/bar joist that supports roof. Basic building is concrete block structure that supports bar joist roof structure. Steel tension straps/bars in background provide diagonal X bracing/shear bracing against wind and other forces against the side of building. Washtenaw near Huron Parkway, Ann Arbor, Michigan. January, 2007.
