My Construction Photos > Bridge construction, steel construction: Erecting prefabricated panels of a Mabey steel truss panel temporary bridge over the Merrimac River on Route 113. Ironworker on top of erected panels guides crane operator, facing toward us, while ground man guides panel into place. Panels are connected by single driven pin at bottom and bolted connection at top. Tyngsborough, MA 2005.
My Construction Photos > Bridge construction, steel construction: One of each pier in the last/west two sets. Top of near pier has two sets of rollers for the bottom chord of the Mabey Bridge to be pushed onto and to be supported as the bridge frame is pushed to the far pier. Each roller has a perpendicular bolt that is tightened against the roller to lock it when the frame is not being pushed. The bolt for the left near roller is prominently shown in the center of the inset detail. Appearing beyond the rollers is timber cribbing that forms the top of the last pier on the left side, which will support the bridge frame at the end of its erection and push from the east bank. Tyngsborough, Massachusetts 2005.
My Construction Photos > Bridge construction, steel construction: Rollers at east/ launch end acting on bottom chord/ structural element of Mabey steel truss panel temporary bridge over the Merrimack River on Route 113. Most obvious are the four lateral rollers on vertical spindles that keep bottom chord in alignment above the primary rollers. The primary rollers, the tops of which can just be seen to the right of the lateral rollers, on horizontal spindles/axles actually support the truss panels. They rotate when bridge frame is pushed. A bolt, as shown at far left mid-height of photo, is tightened against each primary roller at all other times to lock the roller and prevent the frame from moving. Tyngsborough, Massachusetts 2005.
My Construction Photos > Bridge construction, steel construction: An International dozer and a Dressta dozer both push on the erection end of the Mabey
Bridge to temporarily carry Route 113 vehicle traffic to allow rehabilitatrion of the adjacent steel truss bridge over the Merrimack River. Additional prefab panels will then be erected to lengthen the bridge, which then can be pushed out further. Cycle continues until bridge reaches west shore of Merrimack. Tyngsborough, MA 2005.
My Construction Photos > Bridge construction, steel construction: The bowstring steel truss Merrimack River Bridge on Route 113 at Tyngsborough, and the prefabricated Mabey steel truss panel temporary bridge being erected alongside it. The beautiful old bridge will be rehabilitated while vehicles cross the river on the temporary bridge. Tyngsborough, Massachusetts 2005.
My Construction Photos > Bridge construction, steel pile construction: Concrete bridge abutment sits on the soil embankment on east side of Merrimack River. Soil is supported by retaining wall formed of vertical structural steel soldier beams/piles driven deep into the soil. Soil is directly supported by timber breastboards inserted between flanges of H-sections. (See inserted detail.) Tyngsborough, Massachusetts 2005.

My Construction Photos > Bridge construction, steel construction: View toward west bank of Mabey Bridge that is being erected and pushed across Merrimack River from the east bank. The Mabey
Bridge will temporarily carry Route 113 vehicle traffic to allow rehabilitatrion of the adjacent steel truss bridge over the Merrimack River. At this point the bridge is two piers from its destination, to be pushed across the rollers on the pier it is approaching and then landed on the timber cribbing on the far piers. The bridge will be anchored at the west bank concrete abutment beyond the two far piers. Tyngsborough, Massachusetts 2005.
