My Construction Photos > Steel construction: Three man structural ironworker crew unhooks large, high steel truss from crane. All are wearing fall protection: body harness with safety lanyard attached by sliding clip to top flange of truss. UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, 2004.
My Construction Photos > Structural steel construction. Structural steel ironworkers weld rigid/moment connections on adjacent girders to support fifth floor of five floor building. Each is straddling girder. Two were raised into position by JLB hydraulic boom manlifts. The worker on left climbed ladder to get into position. A worker is walking top of girder in center of photo bringing tools/supplies to welder. None of the workers, or others on this project were wearing personal fall protection. Liberty Lofts, Ann Arbor, Michigan, February 2006

My Construction Photos > Steel construction: Structural ironworker inserts bolt through bottom flange plate and bottom flange of beam with left hand and screws on nut from top with right hand. Bottom flange plate was earlier welded to the steel column to left in the fabrication shop. This is the last of 5 bolts on the near side, to which another 5 bolts will be added in the bolt holes shown in background. All bolts will later be torqued tight to transfer forces from beam to bottom plate by friction. Notice the edge of the washers underneath the nuts, to allow easy turning of the nuts with low friction. Computer Science and Engineering Building, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 2004.
My Construction Photos > Steel construction: Two man structural ironworker crew installs bolts for the splice of one structural steel H-column section above another. Both men are wearing fall protection: body harness with safety lanyard attached to previously erected structural steel. Note the prepunched holes in column flanges for bolting steel beams and girders during erection of remainder of the steel structural frame. Cardiovascular Center, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor 2004.
My Construction Photos > Steel construction: Two structural ironworkers perform torch work on massive steel connection of large steel truss. They are working from the elevated platform of a scissor lift whose guardrails provide excellent fall protection. Note that the yellow steel at mid-right is part of the temporary support structure for the truss and not part of the permanent structural system. UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, 2004.
My Construction Photos > Steel construction: Two leather clad structural ironworkers perform torch work on massive steel connection of large steel truss. Each is working off of a rope supported plywood temporary work platform about 50 ft in the air. Each ironworker has fall protection from body harness, safety lanyard, and tie off to top chord of steel truss independent of the work platform. Ironworkers working at height on a small temporary platform in the dark behind welding masks are in an extremely vulnerable situation that requires secure fall protection. UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, 2004.
My Construction Photos > Steel construction: Structural ironworker crews assemble shop fabricated large, high steel truss components into deep, longspan truss. All workers have fall protection: Support from personnel lift, body harness with safety lanyard attached by sliding clip to top flange of truss or other truss location. UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, 2004.
My Construction Photos > Steel construction: Structural ironworkers work at several stations erecting and connecting two giant, steel trusses elevated 40+ feet above current floor elevation. All the ironworkers have fall protection from railings on elevated work platforms or from body harnesses and safety lanyards tied off to steel. UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, 2004.
