My Construction Photos > White-GMC truck tractor pulls trailer of large form panels into which concrete will be placed for basement walls of single family residences. Pittsfield Village, Michigan, March, 2007.
My Construction Photos > Placing concrete with concrete pump: Concrete shoots out end of elephant trunk in a stream of concrete directed by the worker at the left into wood forms, where it joins with the reinforcing steel to create horizontal foundation beams. To the right a second worker inserts and withdraws a flexible concrete vibrator that helps consolidate the concrete. Behind him a worker carries on his back the motor that drives the vibrator.
In background is temporary support wall, consisting of vertical steel soldier piles/beams that support wood breast boards that support the soil of the vertical soil embankment at the edge of the excavation. Soldier beams are supported at mid-height against lateral movement of soil by steel rod tiebacks, shown here with orange steel plates. Colorado Street, Denver, Colorado, December 4, 2006.
My Construction Photos > Concrete construction, road/street construction: Worker uses grooving tool to cut control joint into fresh concrete. The control joint introduces a plane of weakness through the curb, so that if the curb concrete should crack, the crack will form at the control joint, rather than at random. The worker will next use his trowel to smooth out the rough line left by the outside edge of the tool. Notice other control joints already created. Huron Parkway at Huron High School, just North of Geddes, Ann Arbor, Michigan 2005.
My Construction Photos > Concrete construction, residence construction: Cast in place reinforced concrete foundation continuous footing placed in built in place dimension wood lumber side forms. Foundation for basement or lower level garage of residence, cast in bottom of excavation. Note that the bottom of the concrete is below the level of the general excavation, which allows the foundation to rest on soil that was excavated carefully so as not to disturb the soil on which the foundation rests. Concrete would have been placed by direct chute from the readymix concete truck except possibly for that at the far distance that might have been placed with cart/wheelbarrow/crane-bucket. Horizontal steel reinforcing bars were placed in the forms before the concrete was placed and provide tension strength to the concrete. The steel bars protruding from the concrete are to tie the vertical foundation wall, either cast in place concrete or concrete block masonry, to the foundation footing. Arlington Street, Ann Arbor, October 2005.

The steel bars protruding from the concrete are to tie the vertical foundation wall, either cast in place concrete or concrete block masonry, to the foundation footing. The rough grooves 2-3 inches wide between the protruding bars will further tie foundation wall concrete or grout to the footing to prevent horizontal movement between the wall and the footing when backfilled soil pushes against the foundation wall. Arlington Street, Ann Arbor, October 2005.
My Construction Photos > Concrete construction, road/street construction: Advance concrete readymix truck places concrete through its front chute into forms for street curb. The two workers bent over are rough forming the vertical curve of the curb shape, using a piece of 2"x4" lumber. Huron Parkway at Huron High School, just North of Geddes, Ann Arbor, Michigan 2005.
My Construction Photos > Concrete construction, road/street construction: Worker hits curb steel curb side forms with hammer to vibrate concrete so that it flows briefly to consolidate in the forms. Forms are steel channels, especially manufactured to be footing/curb forms. They are supported in position and against outward pressure of concrete by round steel rods that are driven into the base material by a sledge hammer. Huron Parkway at Huron High School, just North of Geddes, Ann Arbor, Michigan 2005.

The two workers are shoveling concrete to form the curb's vertical curve. Worker on right is placing concrete for curb height using concrete he took from the lower placed concrete. Worker on left is rough-sculpting the concrete into the vertical part of the curb. Huron Parkway at Huron High School, just North of Geddes, Ann Arbor, Michigan 2005.
