Antique fire engine: 1879 Amoskeag Steam Fire Engine: The Jackson Number 1. Purchased by The Dalles, Oregon from the Manchester Locomotive Works of New Hampshire in 1879, it pumped water at 550 gallons per minute. The bed for the fire in the steamer was laid in advance so it could be started when the engine cleared the doors of the station. The steamer was continuously hooked up to the steam boiler of The Dalles City hall, keeping the water in the chamber pre-heated. It took about 10 minutes with this head start for a good head of steam to build up, about as long as it took to get to the fire. The steam in the chamber then forced the pistons of the pump to go up and down, causing the water to flow. The Jackson Number 1 was retired from service by 1915, when motorized engines arrived. Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, The Dalles, Oregon, 2005.
