Earthmoving, aggregate construction: Large 5+ CY/CM Hendrix draining dragline bucket is operated by Liebherr HS 895 HD Litronic hydraulic open lattice boom 91,000 kg / 400,000 lb capacity crawler crane. A dragline bucket is controlled by three elements: The vertical wire rope above the bucket raises and lowers the bucket either with or independent of the boom raising/lowering. The chain from front of bucket is pulled in and let out by the wire rope operated by a front spindle. The short wire rope attached to the top-front of bucket allows the bucket to pitch front first into the excavation pit, then be pulled upward at end of loading to capture the load. The basic operation is to pull in a load, then release the bucket to swing forward and be lowered to capture the next load. CONEXPO, Las Vegas, Nevada, March 15-19, 2005.

Pier, foundation construction, concrete construction: Workers guide precast concrete retaining wall panel into position just inside the flanges of the H-section structural steel soldier beam as crane lowers it following hand signals of the superintendent in foreground. The panel will rest on the square shim packs on top of the pier caps of the deep drilled reinforced concrete piers. Soil will then be backfilled and compacted against the far side of the panel(s), and the panels will be supported by the outside flange of the soldier beams against the horizontal outward force of the compacted soil. In the background are the temporary casings used to support the sides of the drilled pier holes until concrete was placed in the holes. Huron Parkway, Ann Arbor, Michigan 2005.
Pier, foundation construction, concrete construction: Shim packs positioned on top of pier caps to support each end of precast concrete retaining wall panels at proper elevation and alignment. A precast panel rests on a shim pack on the left, and a shim pack is ready to support a precast panel on the right. A shim is a thin piece of material to adjust position of a structural element. Shim packs are stacks of metal or plastic or plastic coated metal shims, and the number and thickness of shims is selected to adjust for the actual distance between top of pier cap and specified erected elevation of the precast panel. Pier caps are intentionally a little less than specified erected elevation of precast panels to allow for precise adjustment of panel elevation with shims. Shim packs are placed just inside the outer flange of soldier beams, because the precast panels will be just inside the outer flange, which will provide support against the outward horizontal pressure of soil backfilled behind the retaining wall panels. Retaining wall construction: Contractor superintendent holds rod at top of placed precast concrete panel and City surveyor/inspector checks elevation. Allowable tolerance = 1/8 inch. Two workers install blocking at mid-left of photo, to position panel against front flange of soldier beam H-section. The angle of the clips attached to the panel shows the crane is no longer supporting the panel. Instead, the bottom of the panel rests on steel shim packs, which can be adjusted in thickness to meet elevation requirements.
