Placing undeground concrete: Concrete bucket is being filled by direct chute from concrete ready mix truck. Caterpillar 345B backhoe has backed down slope toward underground utility tunnel into position to lift concrete bucket and rotate 180 degrees into position to place the concrete in the utility tunnel. Access to the utility tunnel construction is behind backhoe, by ladder. At upper left of photo is cylindrical manhole surface access to tunnel. Mott Childrens Hospital, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, May, 2007.
Worker pushes concrete buggy to concrete placement position after filling buggy from laydown concrete bucket at edge of floor. Worker will tilt the buggy forward to place its concrete, and then return to this point to load additional concrete. Ashley Terrace, Ann Arbor, Michigan April, 2007.
Laydown concrete bucket delivers fresh concrete through its bottom gate valve to worker powered concrete buggy at building floor edge. Worker operates gate valve lever with right hand. Bucket is supported by crane. The natural tilt of the laydown bucket allows it to extend inside the floor edge, held in place by the wire cable perimeter fall protection, in this instance. Worker will push concrete buggy to concrete placement position and tilt it forward to place its concrete, and then return to this point to load additional concrete. Ashley Terrace, Ann Arbor, Michigan April, 2007.
Placing concrete footing at grade from ready-mix truck chute. Huron Village Shopping Center, Ann Arbor, 2002.
Placing concrete with concrete pump: Concrete shoots out end of elephant trunk in a stream of concrete directed by the worker at the left into wood forms, where it joins with the reinforcing steel to create horizontal foundation beams. To the right a second worker inserts and withdraws a flexible concrete vibrator that helps consolidate the concrete. Behind him a worker carries on his back the motor that drives the vibrator.
In background is temporary support wall, consisting of vertical steel soldier piles/beams that support wood breast boards that support the soil of the vertical soil embankment at the edge of the excavation. Soldier beams are supported at mid-height against lateral movement of soil by steel rod tiebacks, shown here with orange steel plates. Colorado Street, Denver, Colorado, December 4, 2006.
Cast-in-place concrete construction, reinforced: In center of photo, at far end of trench, bent end of rebar is used to pull up bottom rebar in trench during concrete placement to achieve necessary concrete cover under rebar to protect it from soil/moisture/salts and produce bond between concrete and steel. In addition, worker uses shovel to support rebar while concrete is placed. Concrete is being placed through chute from ready-mix concrete truck. Depot Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan, October, 2006.

Concrete construction/readymix/placement: Advance front-discharge ready-mix concrete truck delivers and places concrete in trench. The mechanisms that position the concrete placing chute are all controlled by the truck driver from his driving position, which allows him to continually position truck and chute in the best placement location while placing concrete.
Chute control mechanisms include the following: 1. Top of chute, where concrete is fed into chute, can be rotated horizontally through 180+ degrees with horizontal chain drive around chute top gear, to place concrete at any angle to side or in front of truck. 2. Hydraulic piston at vertical angle from truck front center supports and positions 1st section of chute vertically. 3. Hydraulic pistons parallel to chute on both sides at joints between sections 1 and 2 and sections 2 and 3 fold chute up out of driver's way when truck is driven to and from job. Depot Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan, October, 2006.
